The latest in the high-selling Colin McRae series, Rally 2005 offers an updated chance for would-be power-sliders to take to forests, back roads and dirt tracks around the world. Progression through the stages can be tough for the uninitiated, but once you get to grips with the realistic controls – don’t expect Burnout-style driving here – and the authentic damage simulation, it is an enjoyable, albeit challenging, game for all abilities. There are plenty of options to choose from – single, multiplayer, career challenge, and so on – plus an online mode that enables eight gamers to go tête-à-tête (or tête-à-tree if you drive like me). You get to drive even faster in this mode, and you really come to appreciate your crashes for the opportunity they give for a detailed examination of the scenery as it spins past and the resultant wreckage. There’s no shortage of vehicles to demolish, either. More than 30 cars are fully simulated, including four-wheel-drive classics, in which you can compete in 23 rallies and 300 stages, as well as innumerable tests, challenges, cups, super cups, shields and championships. Rally 2005 offers more of everything from past outings, and then some, and is a solid addition to any virtual racer's collection.Click here to download a PC playable demo of Colin McRae Rally 2005.
